EIGHTEEN

GAVIN

Her plea stabs me in the heart. Of course, I’d give her anything she asked of me. There’s no question that I want her to know about us—to remember us—but will I be betraying a friendship by telling her? Will Ryan be furious with me for revealing the truth?

She deserves to know. And she’s asking me, point blank, to tell her everything. I know my eagerness to fill her in is two-faced. It’s selfish, yet it’s what she wants. I can see how much she needs this...

I can feel the connection. I always have. But to hear her say that she feels it too... My heart aches for her to know about our love. Maybe then she’ll come back to me, where she belongs—curled in my arms where I’ll never let her go again.

“Where do you want me to start?” I concede completely to her will.

“How did we meet?” she looks at me nervously, but trustful I’ll tell her what she wants to know.

“We met at a frat house party. I couldn’t take my eyes off of you. You were so beautiful, charismatic. Everything about you drew me in.” I can’t help but smile as I reminisce about the first night I saw her. “When you finally noticed me too, we locked eyes. We were trapped in each other’s stare. We couldn’t pull our eyes away. I guess you felt the same intense feeling you describe now, but it scared you. You ran outside to get away.” A lump forms in my throat as I near the tragic part of the night. Hannah’s eyes don’t leave mine as I add, “I felt this...unexplainable need to follow you. I felt protective of you, even though I didn’t know you.

“When I finally found you, you were in the woods, lying on the ground,” my voice cracks under the pressure of the memories. The sheer mass of the pain feels like it’s crushing my sternum. The fingers of a closed fist squeeze out the broken shards of my heart with no remorse. “You were hurt. The bottom of your clothes was torn, and there was a fair amount of blood below your waist...”

Hannah gasps as she comprehends what I’m telling her. Tears well in her eyes and her lip quivers. My hand instinctively wipes her tears and strokes the side of her face to soothe away the pain.

“I covered you over, called an ambulance and waited for them to arrive. When they took you to the hospital, I followed behind in my car. Then I stayed in the waiting room with your parents until they told me you were okay.”

I hold back a sob, but see Hannah’s shoulders heaving as she cries loudly. I try to restrain myself from crossing a line, but I can’t refrain from holding her any longer. My arms wrap around her tightly as she clings desperately to me—letting me carry her pain, if only during the short time of her visit.

Her tears finally subside, and she looks up at me with puffy, red-rimmed eyes.
